Neta Ariely

Hi, my name is Neta Ariely, welcome to my Independent Study blog! My friend and I were both interested in Biomedical Engineering as a field of study (specifically leg prosthetics) so we decided to pursue an Independent Study in biomedical engineering so we could learn more about it. During our research, we discovered that one of the main hindrances people with prosthetics face is an inability to easily exercise. Most exercises, running for example, require a whole different (incredibly expensive) device. Subsequently, only people who are able to afford a multi-thousand dollar prosthetic can easily exercise, which can lead to all types of chronic health issues. Physical activity therefore is wildly inaccessible to the majority of people who wear prosthetics, like veterans or those who were in car accidents, which can cause myriads of potentially fatal health problems. Join us on our journey to try and reduce the limitations people and prosthetics currently face.

Re-evaluation

These past two weeks we have conducted multiple interviews with Mr. Adair, the contacts both Ms. Starling and Mr. Babwah gave us and have reached out to more people regarding our current course of action. Based on the feedback we have received, Ela and I have once again decided to reevaluate how we want to …

Reducing the costs

One of the main reasons prosthesis are so expensive is because each prosthesis has to be customized. That requires people to go into a doctors office and have measurements and scans done in order to make a prosthetic socket, which is the device that connects the prosthesis to the residual limb. If there was a …

A (slightly) new direction

These past 2 weeks, we discovered that people with AK (above knee) prosthetics have difficulty riding bikes; prosthetic knees don’t bend enough to to support the cycling movement. Not only is biking/cycling one of the best forms of aerobic exercise, many people in LDCs (Less Developed Countries) use bikes. In our AP Human Geography class, …
